Advantages: Digital cameras are fast growing in popularity over the old 35mm film cameras. The digital ones are designed to capture and store images digitally rather than on film which has to be developed and processed. With a digital camera you have the option of immediately viewing the picture you just took to see if it came out good.

If not, there’s the option of deleting the image and retaking the picture. With the 35 mm film cameras once you took the picture, there was no way of knowing how it turned out until after it’s been developed and that’s when you realize that Uncle Jimmy’s head had been cut off from the picture. With the onset of digital cameras, one can now ensure perfect pictures every time.

Digital also has the added bonus over 35mm in that it’s in digital format and stored in a computer rather than on paper or film which grows old and brittle over time. Another feature digital cameras have is that they also have the capability of recording sounds and videos as well as pictures. Imagine being able to record your baby’s precious laugh as you’re taking pictures without having to run for the video camera.

Types

Video Cameras The main purpose of these are to record actual moving images. Aside from the professional video camera used in professional movie productions, there are the camcorders and webcams. The camcorder is generally used by the general public to capture memorable pictures and sounds of their lives.

One can watch playback directly from a liquid crystal display on the camcorder itself or connect it to their television set or computer for viewing. Webcams are cameras that are attached to computers and usually used to view the person you are communicating with via instant messaging.

Live-preview Digital Camera One has the ability to frame and preview a photo before taking the picture. These have the capability of making mini movies although they’re typically used for small spur of the moment type of filming as the quality is not quite as good as an actual camcorder. These are divided into two different types of categories

Compact Digital Camera Small and easy to carry, these cameras are widely popular with the majority of amateur photographers. An excellent camera for capturing personal moments to be cherished for years to come. Due to having a smaller zoom capability than your DSLR cameras and a larger range of depth to be in focus, professional photographers tend to think the images are flat looking.

Bridge Cameras Similar to SLR type of cameras, these share the advanced features of the DSLRs while still sharing the live-preview capability and smaller sensor sizes of the compact camera. They provide zoom lens capability to allow some creativity in taking photos. Bridge cameras are considered in a class that falls between the compact and the professional DSLRs.
Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera (DSLRs)

These professional cameras allow for greater flexibility in photographing subjects with interchangeable lens, sensor size and quality, control among many other features. With the DSLRs one has the capability of taking professional looking photographs and the ability to resize to larger views for professional looking pictures.

Whatever your needs are, you are sure to find a digital camera to fit your lifestyle.

If you are in the market to purchase a digital camera, you have surely seen several different types of cameras. It isn’t exactly clear what the differences between the types are, and it can be confusing trying to choose the digital camera that’s right for you. In this article, we will discuss the different types of cameras so that you can better understand what to look for in purchasing a digital camera.

Point and Shoot Digital Cameras

Most consumer cameras on the market today fall into the category of Point and Shoot digital cameras. These cameras usually provide resolutions of between 2 and 4 megapixels (million pixels). These cameras are the digital version of your typical 35mm consumer camera.

A point and shoot digital camera is designed to do just that – take snapshots. They provide limited flexibility with options, although many newer models have some limited options for special effects. The image quality from a point and shoot digital camera is generally good enough for common uses, such as auction photos, and even 4 X 6 prints.

If you just want a standard, entry level digital camera for family snapshots and auction photos, then a point and shoot digital camera is a budget conscious choice.

Semi Professional Digital Cameras

A semi professional digital camera is a more advanced version of a point and shoot digital camera. Typically, these cameras provide resolutions between 5 and 6 megapixels (million pixels). They also often offer the user additional settings and greater control over the camera. The image quality of these cameras is good enough to produce clear prints up to about 8 x 10.

A semi professional digital camera may be the best option for you if you seek greater creative control than you can get with a point and shoot model. The increased flexibility does come with a price. Most semi professional models are priced much higher than point and shoot models.

Digital SLR Cameras

If you are a serious or professional photographer, no less than a Digital SLR model will do. SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. Digital SLR cameras are very similar in operation to their 35 mm SLR counterparts. Also, many camera companies (such as Cannon and Nikon) have built their digital SLR models to be compatible with 35 mm SLR lenses. This is a great benefit to professional photographers who can select a model that is compatible with their existing lenses.

Digital SLR cameras provide an amazing amount of creative control over the camera and the resulting images. Also, these cameras provide resolutions over 6 Megapixels and can produce prints of poster size without noticeable pixelization.

A Digital SLR camera (without lenses) is a pricey investment indeed. Currently, you can expect to spend $1500 or more on the camera alone. Accessories and lenses cost extra.

The best cheapest digital camera can cost as little as $100. You might think you can only get something low quality at this price, but there are still some options out there that will get you some nice photos at this price. You can find digital cameras at this price that can have up to 6 megapixels in resolution, which should look nice on larger prints. As a bonus, most digital cameras that are cheap are also designed especially for beginners. The four digital cameras below are the best cheap digital cameras for under $100.

Nikon Coolpix L11

The Nikon Coolpix L11 is a digital camera that takes good photos, it costs less than $100 and it has a 6 megapixel resolution. The optical zoom is 3x, the ISO range can go up to 800 and it also has face priority auto focus. It weighs only 4.4 ounces, it has a compact design and you also have the option to shoot videos with it.

Samsung S630

This budget digital camera is called Samsung S630 and it’s one of the easiest to use. You can easily take good looking photos with it, which makes it a good choice for beginners on a budget. The resolution is 6 megapixels and it also comes with a number of modes, which allow you to take photos in different situations. I’m talking about backlit subjects, close-ups or sunsets, to name a few. A nice option for beginners is attaching small audio clips that last for 10 seconds to the photos you take.

VuPoint DC-WPC-ST531T-VP

This VuPoint camera can also function underwater, which is a great option to have for a camera that costs less than $100. It comes with a 5 megapixel resolution. Its water resistance allows you to submerge underwater up to 50 feet and make movies with it. As a downside, it comes with no optical zoom, only digital, so you probably shouldn’t count on using it at all. The speed range of the shutter is 1/10,000 of a second.

Digital Concepts Digital Camera/ Video Camcorder

If making videos is as important as taking photos, this is a very good choice, and you get to pay less than $100 for it. When you use it in camcorder mode, you can fit almost three hours of movie if you have a 1GB memory card inside. The image quality is a bit worse than the other cameras, at only 3.1 megapixels. However, it can also be used as a webcam if you wish.

I recently got married. On top of all the other preparations, I knew that I wanted to capture my honeymoon, a trip to St. Lucia, in a way that would stand the test of time. Even though I don’t have an HD TV in my house, I wanted to shoot my honeymoon in such a way that when I did get one, my honeymoon memories would look as pristine as possible.

Here are the top things I thought about.

As a professional video producer, I have bought a lot of video equipment. I purposely pay a premium and buy from a professional photo/video store. Why? Because they support what they sell. Not just the warranty. But the questions you have both before and after the purchase. 9 times out of 10, the staff has used the camera in the way I intend to and therefore can answer all my questions. This isn’t something you get at a Big Box store. They want to get you in and out as quickly as possible and other than the main functions, they leave you to figure out all the details. Also, when you have a problem, given they haven’t used the camera beyond turning it on, they won’t be able to answer the more complex questions that inevitably arise. You then get stuck dealing with the manufacturer over the phone which can’t compare to hands on assistance.

The second most important thing to keep in mind is that while there may be an HD on the side of the camera, the quality of the video is not a standard. There are all sorts of different data rates that can be called HD. You need to determine how you are going to use the video you shoot, what data rate will be overkill and what will be necessary.

In my case, because I also planned to use the camera for work, I wanted a high data rate that would come close to my pro gear so that I had a better chance of using the footage from both and not have a huge discernible difference in quality.

Do not underestimate the importance of camera size in your decision. When I got engaged, I took my bride-to-be to Las Vegas and proposed at midnight in front of the Bellagio fountains during the final performance of the dancing fountains while the Star Spangled Banner played. I was lucky enough to have brought a pocket size camera. I actually have both pictures and video shot from the same camera. Memories I would not have if the camera was too big. While better than a cell phone camera, the quality wasn’t great, but it was capturing the memory that was most important, not the number of pixels it captured. In this case, something was far better than nothing.

In the case of my honeymoon, I wanted something better. Everything is a trade off. Because I wanted to use this while away, I still wanted something easy and small. But I also wanted a high enough data rate. I chose one that shot far superior video that the pocket size camera’s but was still small enough to be convenient. AND, it actual shoots amazing 3 Mpixel stills to boot!

The final thing you have to know is that the camera will work with your computer. Is it PC only? Does it support Mac too? Does it come with all the software you need or does it have to be purchase separately? Buying from a specialty shop meant that I could actually bring my computer to my supplier and connected the camera I intended to buy. It allowed me to confirm that it would work BEFORE I purchased it. Big Box stores are simply not setup to do this, and with their margins being so small, they aren’t motivated to provide that level of service.

I hope this gives you a running start at a great choice that best suits your intended use.

By: Warren Leppik

About the Author:

In the world of digital professional photography, taking pictures is not as simple as clicking that shutter button. Though digital imaging has made it easier and affordable for photographers, the quality of the pictures would still be questioned. A lot of factors have to be taken into consideration if you want to be successful at professional photography. Light, composition and background affect pictures. The professional photographer knows this so he or she often ends up chasing light to achieve that perfect photo.

A normal digital camera is not enough in this endeavor. A photographer needs to be armed with a professional digital camera to get all the details. It produces the best image quality and has the capacity to operate even when exposed to low light. It has complicated settings that a novice would not understand at first glance. Photographers often learn through trial and error. This is why a professional digital camera comes in handy because it eliminates the need for films that are expensive to print.

And when you go by trial and error, you would make a lot of mistakes along the way. With a professional digital camera, you would be able to check the result immediately without printing the picture. You would also be able to capture extremely small subjects even if it’s too far away because of its zoom capacity. The high-end professional digital cameras allow this and you would be able to get every last detail. Fast-moving subjects are also not a problem with a professional digital camera. It has special controls that let you capture the subject. For example, you are at a basketball game. You can’t exactly order the players to stand still while you take a picture.

The great thing about a professional digital camera is it gives you more control on how you want your pictures to come out. It allows you more freedom on how to play with light. You can set how much light can enter for a particular shot or if you just want to get a picture of a silhouette. This eliminates blurs because you fixed your camera at the right setting. It’s all a matter of how you adjust your shutter speed and play with natural light.

Most digital cameras focus automatically so you don’t have a choice if you want to go about this manually. With the professional digital camera, you could fix it to focus on your subject automatically or not. Another advantage is that you could attach different accessories; specialty lenses, waterproof housing and filters. Special filters would emphasize your photos and add effects. They could also neutralize the light if it is too bright or dark.

The only problem with the professional digital camera is its cost. Because of its quality and features, it is justifiably expensive. But you can buy discount goods at your local discount store so this could solve this issue. Even if it is still expensive at the discount store, the price point has been reduced because it is either used or refurbished.

So if you want to take the best photos, buy a professional digital camera. Your investment would pay off when you see the quality of your pictures.

Gone are the days when you would need to employ a professional to take a video for your business projects. Whether you need it to provide training to your employees or students, you can do it yourself with the help of a digital video camera. In fact, with the advent of the Internet, and e-learning becoming so popular nowadays, a digital video camera has become essential equipment for all organizations, especially training or educational institutes.

Digital video cameras are extremely simple to use. They are lightweight and compact. Also, the transfer of video data to your computer for editing is extremely simplified in a digital video camera using todays Firewire cables.

So, now the question arises that how does one go about choosing a camera for himself/herself?

Before you go shopping for a digital video camera, it is essential that you answer a few questions. These will help you to pick up the best camera which is most suitable to your needs.

Since voice clarity is critical in a digital video camera, you need to know whether you will be shooting indoors or outdoors.

Also, what kind of videos do you plan to take – are they going to be of people shopping around in a mall or mostly of officers giving multimedia presentations in a conference room?

What is the kind of lighting that you are going to get? Is the weight of the camera an issue?

What is the battery life of the camera that you will need? Do you plan to shoot for a couple of hours together or only a few minutes? Do you plan to use any special effects while shooting?

Once you have answered all these questions, you will be able to get a basic idea of the kind of camera that you need.

Let’s go over the types of digital video cameras for consumers and hobbyists. First there is DV, HDDV, Mini DV. Handheld palm size cameras, larger full featured cameras with great audio options, and finally cameras that rival professional quality and can be used to make some very professional looking video products.

It is also important that you have the correct software for enhancing the images once you have loaded them onto your computer. These will help you to edit your work in the best possible manner and also easily load them for video conferencing, emailing etc.

Many software programs for NLE editing (non linear editing) exist for the consumer and pro alike. Adobe makes it Premier line of editing software which has proven to be quite popular and effective over the years. This is more of a mid level software and is relatively expensive. I use it for my corporate editing needs. Other mid to high level software packages include Final Cut Pro (on the Mac platform), and DV Express (from Avid). Final Cut is an awesome product if you use the Apple computers. Hollywood uses it to edit movies nowdays, and it has tons of amazing features to it. However it is not user freindly to the novice. The learning curve is steep. On the cheaper side of things you can use the Imovie software on the Mac side of things, Pinnacle Studio 9, Ulead Video Studio 8, and My DVD5 from Sonic. These products will get you editing your DV in no time.

Hence, if you do your homework in advance, you will be happy in the end. So, go and check out websites and shops for information on what you need, talk to shop keepers, and then simply zoom away! There are so many wonderful things you as a consumer can do today with digital video cameras. Don’t wait for the next wave. Jump into digital video today and have some fun with it.

By: Kevin Rockwell

About the Author:

Okay, so you finally decided to get that digital video camera you’ve been saving for. You have enough money to buy a kick-butt video camera. But have you considered the most vital part for the camera? The part that comes into play with every video shot. The digital video camera zoom lens. Without a proper digital video camera zoom lens, your prized video camera isn’t all it could be. You would be much better off if you spent equal amounts on the camera and the digital video camera zoom lens. The lens is that important. Your choice of lenses can distinguish between a good camera and an outstanding camera.

Spend More On The Lens

The digital video camera zoom lens determines how well your videos turn out. It, more than anything else on or in the camera affects the end products. Think about it, every shot you take goes through that lens. Really the camera is just a case for the mechanisms inside. You could make a case for reversing the spending, more on the lens and less on the actual camera. Most digital video cameras don’t come with the ability to change lenses. This fact makes it more important to purchase the best digital video camera zoom lens possible. Another piece of advice regarding the lens is too not purchase the plastic lenses. The clarity is much better from glass digital video camera zoom lens.

If you do plan on purchasing a video camera where you can change the digital video camera zoom lens then compare the options of each lens to find the one that you want. Experts recommend that you purchase brand names such as Canon, Pentax or Nikon. Be sure to check if the lens will work for your camera. Digital video camera zoom lenses are not created equal and a lens from Nikon may or may not work with a digital video camera made by Canon.

If you are a professional photographer, then you should check out Leica, Carl Zeiss and Leupold. These are specialty lens manufacturers. The quality of the videos will show if you use one of their digital video camera zoom lens. If you are just a beginner then these lenses may not be the best place to start, because of the cost. But if you want extraordinary quality, these digital video camera zoom lenses are the way to go.

Options for digital video camera zoom lenses include normal, wide angle and telephoto. The focal length of the lens has a lot to do with the type of digital video camera zoom lens choice. The quality of the lens is also determined by lens speed, a significant factor in your shoot quality. You should think about focusing distance as well as advanced features such as vibration reduction, USM or ultrasonic motor and filter thread which should be present in any good digital video camera zoom lens.

Before you make that digital video camera zoom lens purchase you should research each feature that you want and choose the lens that fulfills those wishes the best. As a rule of thumb, the more expensive lenses are usually the better choice since more of the elements in the lens with be glass, although this does increase the camera weight. In the end if you do the research and take into consideration your shooting needs and budget, you will make the right choice

By: Ken Glauser

About the Author:
